Become Better Brands

Wondering what it takes to become a better brand?

Foursquare... The future of local business marketing or not?

Okay, so some of you might have heard of four square. If not, it is a website that allows people to "check-in" from different locations and even provide reviews. It also can provide access to special deals. Check in the most from one location and become the "mayor." Local and small businesses are beginning to market their location and encourage people to check in. When people check in, it sends out a message to people's Twitter and Facebook accounts. What's your opinion on marketing your business using Foursquare?

I think that location based marketing can be very good for brick and mortar based businesses who target locally. You can encourage people to "check-in" from your business and it will basically be free advertising for you. You could offer some incentives for things like becoming the "mayor" or instant incentives for checking in at the register. It could also backfire, as people can write negative things about your business. Foursquare seems to take word of mouth marketing and make it even easier as people can just check in from their phones either through the apps or text message.
I agree Gail. Yelp should have an app for your phone similar to foursquare. It is also something to consider about advertising that you are not home. I think that this sort of thing could be the future of local, brick and mortar advertising.

I've been using 4sq. I try to check in as much as possible when I'm out and about. Sometimes it's hard when I have my hands full of kids! :D I haven't tried cashing in on any of the 'deals nearby' when they pop up. Right now I only have it update my twitter status, not on FB. Even though I have set tight security settings on my FB profile I try to not to advertise that I'm not home.

Does anyone post to or use Yelp? I've posted some reviews, mostly positive, one wasn't. But I find reviews, especially on waitstaff or service staff helpful when I out with 4 kids. I'd rather patronize the store with the patient clerks and quick cashier than the one that you can't find anyone to help you find something.
