I blog for my business, but infuse some personal into it. Solely promoting your business activities would probably best be left to a newsletter. Blogs are really best used to put a human face to a brand. Companies who have blogs & only post something every few months look worse than not having a blog at all. Even if you are active daily on your site, your blog could trick people into believing you are dormant or negligent if your last post was from 6 months ago.

If you decide to blog for business, I would recommend maintaining some consistency and adding complementary posts related to your business area, and that would interest your target market. For example: Say you make baby pacifiers. You should post about other cool baby toys and websites. Have a guestblogger from blogs surrounding the baby topic. Post about research articles regarding pacifiers. Of course, post your specials and maybe post customer photos and testimonials regarding your pacifier. A blog, in addition to social networks, allows you to connect with your customer BEYOND COMMERCE.

For branding purposes, a blog done right can reinforce your brand image through reaching multiple avenues of people. Even if you make paperclips, believe me, there are people out there who would read about them if you add content about organization, etc. Blogs are also great for SEO if you use a wordpress format.
Thanks Heather! What goals do you have for your blog?
I blog for my business. My goal is to add value to my readers and prospects as well as demonstrate myself as an expert. My goal also is to improve my SEO rankings and keep the search engine spiders crawling my site. It is rare I blog anything "personal" per se however I don't blog alot related to my specific services i write about topic's that are of interest to the people visiting my site.

The challenge I have is finding the time to write. When I had interns they did 80% of the writing for the blog, but since I'm not running a summer internship program my content has gone from daily to weekly.
Different blogs have different goals. For super mom entrepreneur, we like to feature mom entrepreneurs, mom-made product reviews, giveaways for mom businesses, tales of being a mom entrepreneur, etc. It is more to engage with the potential attendees of our conference.

For Bloggin' Mamas, we blog about being a mom, product reviews from brands, blogging resources, travel tips, blogging events and contests, giveaways, etc. Again, this is to engage the potential attendees. You can't really have a blogging conference without a blog.

Happy and Healthy Mom is more than a blog. It is an e-zine with informative articles, product reviews, giveaways, interviews, polls and more targeting pregnant and new moms, focusing on the woman behind the baby. We want to empower moms to take care of themselves without guilt for taking time away from their babies. We want to spport them through a time of life that is not like any other.

For Become Better Brands, I write blog posts about resources for companies trying to build their brand image. I tend not to be as personal on those because it is more business-focused, as opposed to mom-focused.

I bring in the personal aspect when I do product reviews, tell a story, or express an opinion about something. I like to infuse a little humor whenever possible.

Ran across this blog post today that presents good material on why small business owners should blog. "Why You Must Have a Blog No Matter What Type of Business You Have"
Thanks for the referral to the great article. I can see her and I are on the same page.
I blog because it was suggested by my web editor, Heather Benoit here on BBB she does GREAT work.
She pointed out that it was an easier way for me to add contenet and less likely for me to mess up the webpage! :)
I don't do it very often, plus I've just started, but my main goal is to blog every Friday for internet Freebies. I then try for one business related, store suggestion, feature product that sort of thing also once a week.
So far I'm enjoying it and I'm hoping it will encourage others to visit my site.
I post deals on my site and they show up on my blog. I post things here and there but not enough.
I am updating the site alot right now and I need to work on the SEO and making my site more user friendly for people that arent all about Disney. One of my agents writes an awesome blog. I know I need to find the time to write more there.
Hi Kelly,

I see you are taking a blog challenge to increase your blogging. Good for you! As for it being Disney related. This is actually great. You have a niche that you can run with in terms of people who love Disney and people who are looking to travel to Disney parks. Plus it feeds into your business. As for the look of the site, I really like it. If feels like Disney and is very clean-cut. You have a branding image that is consistent and you should not tamper with that too much.
